Have you ever thought you were a regular child that did child like things but realized you had a wonderful gift? That’s what happened to Kenard Wilson. At the age of 13, he found out he had a voice of gold. He found out he could sing.
Kenard Wilson was born December 1, 1989 in Baltimore, MD. He grew up without a father figure but that didn’t stop him from doing the things he wanted to do as a man. He went to school, joined the football and debate team and played basketball. At the age of 12, he started freestyle battling against the most known battlers around the city. That’s when it all began.
At the age of 15, he realized his passion for music. Since him and his mother grew up together, he listened to old school music. He found himself listening to Barry White, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass and many more singers. He sang in the church choir and that’s when he found his voice.
When he was 17, he met his mentor Renae Oliver. She told him everything there is to know about the music industry. She told him you can’t trust everybody with everything. She told him about copyrights and she taught him how to do good interviews. He taught himself how to write songs. When he started writing songs, he decided to make his first solo CD, My Story. When it didn’t turn out as good as he thought, he practiced more of his writing skills. His writing skills grew stronger so he decided to make more music.
On June 5th,2009, he graduated from Samuel L. Banks High at the age of 19. After high school Kenard entered the National Song Writing Competiton. He made the first round, but not the second.
As of today, Kenard Wilson is giving back by talking to young children about life and how important education is. The main thing he tells them for inspiration is “What doesn’t kills you, makes you stronger.”
