INFO:
Cardiff-based Futuretown came together in early
2007 after Mark Heenan had stepped from behind the drum kit to pick up
his guitar and take to the mic. He joined forces with a manager and they began the search for band members.
A bass player friend was the first to hear the
potential in the songwriting and was joined soon after by Glyn Bateman
on drums. The final piece of the Futuretown sound needed to be found in a
defining lead guitar. Topher Reed joined Futuretown after hearing an
early demo.
In August 2007 rhythm guitarist Luke Thomas was added to the line-up and
they went straight into Cardiff’s Long Wave Studio’s after producer
Romesh Dodangoda (Funeral For Friend, Kids In Glass Houses) offered to
record their demo.
In 2010 bass guitarist Danny Kilbride left Futuretown and the band was
on the lookout for a new bass player. Reccommended by a friend, Akos
Fortagh joined Futuretown as the new bass player.
Futuretown have built up a strong local following as they play selected
dates in and around South Wales. The band are currently booking shows
outside of Wales to build on the fan base in other parts of the UK.
Review:
It takes a band with real self-assurance to attempt power-pop with the grandeur of U2, but it’s something Futuretown do with consummate ease. Hands to the heavens, choruses that demand 50,000 people are singing the words deliriously back, shimmering, dexterous guitar lines - we get the lot inside twenty minutes, and all with a conviction and craft that puts Futuretown in the same league as their world dominating partners in sound. Truly memorable stuff.
